What Is Therapy For Anxious Attachment?
Therapy for anxious attachment helps rewire a nervous system that has learned to stay on alert in relationships. It works on the fears that come up in dating and partnership, and it builds a sense of self-worth that holds steady on its own.
Over time, you move away from relying on other people to tell you that you are okay. Away from people-pleasing, away from the drafted and redrafted messages, away from the reaching out that never feels like enough. You move toward feeling emotionally safe, and toward relationships that are genuinely secure.
Attachment styles are learned patterns, not permanent personality traits. They can change. I bring more than three decades of experience to this work.
How I Work
My approach draws on two methods that work in tandem.
Attachment-based intervention. We look at where your relational patterns began, usually tracing back to your experiences with primary caretakers in childhood. From there, we rebuild trust and a sense of internal security.
Cognitive behavioral therapy. We identify the negative thoughts that fuel the anxiety, and we learn to reframe them.
The work often involves:
A comprehensive assessment of your history and relationship patterns
Learning how attachment patterns form and how yours took shape
Building coping skills through discussion and in-session practice
Practicing those skills in your real life, between sessions
What Anxious Attachment Can Look Like
Dating leaves you anxious rather than excited
The nerves stay with you, even when things are going well.
You overthink every message before you send it
When to reply, how to word it, what it will signal if you answer too fast.
Silence sends you into panic
You do not hear back when you expected to, and your body reacts before your mind does.
You analyze everything they said and did
Replaying conversations, searching for the meaning underneath.
You second-guess yourself constantly
Unsure of what you feel, unsure of whether you are allowed to feel it.
Underneath it is the sense of not being good enough
The fear that if they really saw you, they would leave.

Anxious attachment shows up as a nervous system braced for abandonment, long before there is any real sign of it.
